At 19 years old, Matt Talafuse deployed to Iraq as a Black Hawk helicopter mechanic and crew chief. He expected to spend his deployment fixing helicopters.
Instead, he found himself volunteering more than 600 hours inside one of the busiest combat hospitals in Iraq, carrying wounded service members from medevac helicopters and eventually helping prepare 14 fallen Americans for their final journey home.
But Between the Living and the Dead isn't just a war story.
It's the story of what came home with him.
Through war, PTSD, firefighting, marriage, fatherhood, and an unexpected journey of faith, Matt shares what it took to finally confront the things he had carried for years and discover that our hardest chapters can become part of a greater purpose.
Raw, deeply personal, and ultimately hopeful, Between the Living and the Dead is about the weight we carry, the people who help us carry it, and what can happen when we use our own experiences to help carry someone else.
